Giant Trance X3. 2012.

Giant’s Trance X3 is perfect for the first time dual suspension rider; someone who is looking to step up from a one-time only mountain biker to a regular weekend warrior or who is just plain sick of trying to keep up with mates on their dual suspension bikes.

The X3 package consists of budget conscious yet quality components. The suspension is still handled by today’s benchmark, Fox Shox. Both the front fork and rear shock are air sprung which reduces the weight of the overall bike and results in a more progressive ‘bottom less’ feel. Up front there is a Fox 32 RL fork which provides adjustable rebound (the rate at which the fork rebounds from compression – very important!) for front wheel traction and lockout for better pedaling and climbing efficiency. The rear shock is a Fox Float R, which provides adjustable rebound; again very important for rear wheel traction.

The axle that holds the front wheel in place is the new QR15 standard developed by Fox and Shimano. This is a 15mm diameter axle which gives the axle a significant boost in shear strength and torsional rigidity, and no weight penalty. This translates into less front end flex which means more control over technical sections of trail – trust me, it’s worth having this.

The drive train is a mixture of SRAM and Shimano – the two biggest drive train component manufacturers in the world. All constituent components are good value for money, durable and reliable. The most important feature for 2012 is that Giant has upgraded the drive train from a 27 speed to a 30 speed.

What, more gears!

This is the first reaction of 90% of customers we speak to when we mention more gears. Stop complaining! Mechanically most people understand that not all 30 gears are useable, so why bother?

Because of a noticeable increase in efficiency, that’s why. In mountain biking we use the mid range gears frequently, so having more of these increases the efficiency of pedaling – less pedal rotations and more distance covered. Also because the jump from one cog to the next is smaller, the up and down shifts are smoother and faster.

Last but not least, the 2012 Trance frame has undergone a slight modification to the front end. The top head set bearing has increased from 1 1/8-inch to 1 ¼-inch, increasing the torsional rigidity by up to 40%.
