Giant Cross City 1 flat bar road bike

The Giant Cross City 1 is the type of bike which will excite those riders who have perhaps been commuting on a racing bike, and don't want to forego speed for comfort. Light, fast and fun to ride, but with an upright position for improved visibility and less back pain.

Flat bar road bikes have played a large role in the current resurgence in bike sales. The Cross City flat bar bikes from Giant are designed from the ground up to provide a bike significantly superior to other styles of bike where a degree of compromise may have been needed to accomplish a similar result. Cross City style bikes have a lighter weight than all bikes other than racers thanks to the combination of lighter frames and lighter, high quality components. The weight or lack of it, is aided by Giants sensible design decision to make the bikes lean and clean. Without the clutter of unnecessary features or components, you caan tell a Cross City is light just by looking at it. Sure, weighing will give you an actual weight, but the vibe is something you carry with you on every ride. This lighter weight obvously has a very positive effect on the effort required to pedal it along, making it easier for everyone to zip along at a reasonable pace. This helps to some degree with comfort too as the rider is less fatigued, but the main factors assisting with rider comfort is the frame design which allows a semi upright seating position, the flat handlebars (hence the name of the style of bike) and the ergonomic ponts of contact i.e. the handlebar grips and the saddle.

The ability of the Cross City rider to attain good speed with minimal effort, or even a slow speed with almost no effort is encouraging and really makes this style of bike fun to ride. This ease of riding is amplified by easy to operate gears, confident control due to the wide flat handlebars and sure braking thanks to the robust V brakes. Starting with a lightweight aluminium alloy frame Giant have based their choice of components for the Cross City 1 based on the criteria that this is the premium model in the range and is fitted with a composite fork which assists in minimising weight and also aids in rider comfort thanks to the composite materials ability to absorb much of the vibration from the road. The drive train components also have an emphasis on quality and weight, with a Shimano R600 compact crankset, Shimano 105 rear deraileur, chain and cassette and a Giant wheelset complete with sealed bearing hubs, stainless steel spokes and double walled rims providing an efficient transfer of the riders effort into forward motion.
