Hybrid bikes are often used as a commuter bike, ideal for urban or city riding where some poorer road surfaces may be encountered. 

A Hybrid bike is essentially a cross between a Mountain bike and a Road bike, featuring the positive points of both styles. A Hybrid bike has 700c wheels, just like a racer, meaning the bike has good rolling capabilities and is able to reach and maintain a reasonable speed on longer rides. But a Hybrid is fitted with a fatter tyre than a racer which makes a Hybrid bike ideal for riding on a variety of surfaces such as bike paths, trails and country roads and are also great for their load carrying capacity when touring with loaded panniers etc. Hybrid bikes have an even more upright seating position than a Mountain bike, which many people find more comfortable as they sit in this more relaxed position with improved visibility to peruse the surroundings a little easier, whether it be vehicle traffic or flora and fauna. A Hybrid is a bike that is ridden for pleasure, and are ideal for recreational riders who want one bike to carry them over a wide variety of road surfaces.

 

Hybrid bikes are often fitted with suspension forks and suspension seat posts which smooth out most of the bumps along the way which is a real benefit to those riders who would prefer not to suffer any disturbance to their ride enjoyment and is particularly encouraging to new riders getting into cycling. No one wants to ride an uncomfortable bike? Fact is, most people don't. If a bike isn't nice to ride, it will usually find its way down to the back of the shed, never to be seen (or ridden) again. But a bike that is pleasureable to ride will tend to see much more use as it encouages you to get out and ride.

Years ago we had little choice with bike options as there were only a couple of styles of bikes and limited sizes available, but today you can choose a bike that is built for comfort and has additional features to allow it to be tailored to your requirements. So whether you want the full on soft ride option with all the suspension, cushy seat and gel grips or the sleeker "go faster" style, there is likely to be a Hybrid, Urban or City bike to suit you.
